Just an update to my previous post on medical and travel insurance.
The last place we went to get information on this was BCAA. After a lengthy and informative discussion with them we bought medical travel insurance coverage from them for a one year period. We had to get two policies (one for each of us as our age differences and medical issues stopped us from having one insurance policy), and the two combined cost CAN$233 per month. Our annual policy covers multiple trips worldwide. This plan gave us the highest coverage of all the others we compared and it has $0 deductable. Awesome.
We contacted BC MSP and they advised that we can get a once-in-a-lifetime 24 month medical coverage for travel outside Canada and that it would be included in the premiums that we already pay. If we have an issue that needs addressing while we are travelling we can start receiving medical treatments but need to return to Canada asap. If we return to Canada during the 24 months, we can only do so for a maximum of 30 days - if you remain in Canada longer than 30 days, the travel "benefit" would be cancelled.
We plan to continue with travel insurance until we know where we will settle and get residency status, and then terminate MSP coverage and apply for a local private medical plan (not traveller's insurance). Our research so far suggest current rates for this based on our ages and heath (pre-existing condition and related risks) amount to about $3500.00 per year.
All of this has been included and covered in our budgets. Looks good so far.... we will update residency medical insurance as we get more information.
